In today’s dynamic and evolving workplace, the importance of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) cannot be overstated. As someone deeply committed to these principles, I’ve dedicated my career to fostering an environment where every individual feels valued and respected. My journey has been marked by significant achievements and inspiring initiatives, all driven by a passion for making a difference. Here, I share my experiences, the support I’ve received, and my advice for others looking to champion DEI in their own organisations.
My Role and Understanding of DEI
In my role as co-Chair of REACH, I’ve been privileged to lead, pave the way and be a voice for the South Asian Community and worked tirelessly to collate an employee community to represent other Asian employees, whilst promoting REACH.
Currently, I serve as the National Technical and Quality Team Leader. For me, DEI means creating an inclusive environment that brings everyone closer to their identity and culture at work. It’s about making sure everyone feels acknowledged and included, regardless of their background.
Biggest and Proudest Achievement
One of my proudest moments was being nominated for the Workplace Hero category at the Ethnicity Awards. This recognition came as a result of my work as Co-Chair of the REACH Community and for hosting and organising a pioneering team-building workshop in my division. The overwhelming positive feedback and response from this event were truly gratifying.
Exciting Initiatives
I’ve been fortunate to work on some exciting initiatives, one of which is the “Investing in You” workshop. Co-hosting this workshop allowed me to engage and encourage others to attend, and the positive feedback we received was incredibly rewarding.
Support Along the Way
I wouldn’t be where I am today without the incredible support of the I&D Team and my team. Their encouragement and assistance have been invaluable in my DEI journey.
Advice for Others
For those looking to get more involved in DEI, I have a few pieces of advice:
- Speak to people already involved in Inclusion and Diversity (I&D) initiatives and reach out to external stakeholders on LinkedIn to see what other companies are doing.
- Attend I&D events, be involved in organising an event or a “Listen and Learn” talk, participate in presentations, and join LinkedIn groups related to I&D to gain more ideas.
- Embrace all these opportunities at the same time to truly make a difference.
DEI is not just a policy or a box to check; it’s a commitment to fostering a workplace where everyone can thrive. By sharing my journey, I hope to inspire others and become a leader who can identify challenges, find solutions and empower minorities to grasp opportunities, breaking down barriers in a male and white-dominated sector.
